Ik kreeg op deze vaderdag ochtend een mooi t-shirt met daarop “Coronie”, het geboorte dorp van mijn familie in Suriname en “Hong Kong”, de geboorte plaats van mijn bet-overgrootvader Ho-a-Tin. Een vader die samen met zijn broers naar Suriname trok om werk te vinden… Ook kreeg ik een mooie schoen waarin ik spaargeld kan stoppen zodat ik “stinkend rijk” kan worden, niet mijn woorden 😂 Vader zijn is niet altijd even makkelijk omdat je het allerbeste aan je kind wil geven maar soms misschien vanwege bepaalde omstandigheden daar niet toe in staat bent maar uiteindelijk is iedere moeite die je erin stopt iets wat uiteindelijk tot bloei komt, vroeg of laat, so don’t stop investing love 🤎🙏🏿

Sly Stone was one of the first cross-over funk, so Sly Stone was one of the first cross-over funk, soul, rock Pioneers. The first time that i heard his music was actually trough a sample of his track “Everyday People” that was used by Arrested Development back in ‘92. I was a young teenager of 13 years old and I was going through many changes but music was one of my anchors. As I continued to evolve as an artist I started digging into more of the samples I heard and I learned more about the revolutionary nature of Sly’s band being one of the first black and white bands joining forces, making him an even bigger example for artists and bands. It turned out to be a blueprint for my first band and my music style later on, Rock, Soul, Rap and Funk would be the foundations for my music that is Holy Ghost Spirit filled, full of Raw Life Experiences. It was a musical Easter with my band in a youth pr It was a musical Easter with my band in a youth prison on Easter Sunday. We were allowed to support my colleague pastor Jan Jaap during the special Easter service in which a word was shared about the true meaning of Easter and how liberation came for people through the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his death. I saw many familiar faces that I know from the workshops and modules that I am allowed to give there with Criminal Minded in which we work on giving meaning through creativity. There was also a beautiful play by a young man from the local community who portrayed the life of a boy who was challenged to think about his choices and how he was still worthy of being someone in life. What was cool is that I met a boy whose name means HOPE in Amharic (Ethiopian) and he himself got a lot of hope from this meeting. I thought it was a beautiful wink from God because I have been singing a song with Ethiopian influences for years called “Hope”. In between songs I was given the opportunity to share something from my own journey — about how I found liberation in God’s love, made so tangible by Jesus’ resurrection on the third day. It was no ordinary show. We brought music, but also hope. And everyone enthusiastically sang along to the songs that were a mix of our own songs and real gospel songs that help to sing joy. The reactions of the young people? Grateful but real and touched. They thought the performance was “really cool,” but the best part was that hearts were opened. After the performance there was room for some drinks and a slice of cake and some conversations about how things are going. Grateful that I could do something passionately for these young people from my past and my present. Easter is alive — even behind walls.
