Have a good week everyone! New round, new opportun Have a good week everyone! New round, new opportunities, and God blesses the work of our hands! 🙌🏿🤎
Here I am in the picture with one of the talented young people I met after a presentation for Rumas in Suriname 🇸🇷
Sometimes you enter a place where the air feels he Sometimes you enter a place where the air feels heavy. Not because of the heat, but because of the stories trapped there.
Last week, I stood at the Opa Doeli juvenile detention center in Suriname with my eldest son and eldest Hanenberg, from my church. We didn’t come empty-handed. We brought music, my book, school supplies... but most of all, time. Time to listen. Time to share.
Eldest Hanenberg and I told my story and about making choices, right and wrong. About falling and getting back up. About how, at 13, I never dared to dream that I would later earn my living as a writer and speaker.
God has a plan, even if you feel the opposite right now. A plan for hope and a future.
The young people also shared their talents and dreams.
One girl said softly: “I can read well and write stories.”
That sentence stuck. Because sometimes one talent, and the belief in it, is enough to turn your whole life around. I was able to teach them that mistakes don’t have to define the rest of their lives. At the end of my presentation, I asked them to make a choice to leave their old lives behind and choose a new future full of hope with God. They all responded positively, and we concluded with a prayer 🙏🏿
Music, words, faith—they are keys.
And if you place them in someone’s hands at the right moment, a door can open that will never close again.

The stories behind the walls of Santa Boma During The stories behind the walls of Santa Boma
During my visit last July to the youth in Santa Boma prison, Suriname, I met several young people with great talents, but also with difficult stories.
While sharing my story through music, the group of young people loosened up. They sang and rapped along at the top of their lungs, setting the tone. I asked if anyone had any musical talent, and several boys raised their hands. I asked if anyone wanted to play something, but they initially found it too daunting. After I began sharing my own story, it became incredibly quiet, and they listened attentively, perhaps out of recognition and wonder.
After sharing, I indicated that they still have a chance at a new, positive future, even after being incarcerated. I asked if anyone recognized themselves in it, and several boys raised their hands. I asked if they had ever thought about what their talent is. One said rapping, another said becoming a mechanic, one said playing soccer, and another said singing.
I shared with them that I believe everyone has a talent for helping others, and if you use it, you can find happiness in it yourself. This was met with approving nods. I asked if they wanted to showcase some of their talent, and a boy with a big smile came forward and performed a rap in Sranang Tongo about his life, about things he’d done he regretted but now knows better. His performance was beautiful and received with much applause from the young people present and the group leaders.
After him, another boy with a confident expression came forward. He also rapped his own lyrics in Surinamese about how making money is his goal, but not in a bad way, but in a positive way. No longer relying on empty promises, but trusting in his own abilities. I asked him how long it had taken him to write the lyrics, and he said, “One week.” I complimented him on his beautiful lyrics and talent!
After their performances, I asked if I could pray with them for a choice to leave their old lives behind, a choice for God, a clean slate, and much strength and wisdom for the coming period. They appreciated that. I gave them my book + sportsgear that was donated by you guys, thx 🤎🙌🏿🙏🏿
I spent the past nine days in Suriname with my Son I spent the past nine days in Suriname with my Son @j.rigters
Not a vacation, but a mission.
In collaboration with @prison_fellowship_suriname , the @surinamebiblesociety , and other involved organizations, I was able to visit various youth institutions and organizations. Through music, conversations, and my own story, I was able to share hope with young people who are incarcerated—sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively.
Many choices have been made for the Lord. Young people who want to start over, who, despite everything, long for direction, identity, and a meaningful future. I believe that God opens doors, even in the most unexpected places.
Besides work, I also had the opportunity to visit memorable places with my eldest son, deeply rooted in our history. Places that hurt, but also offer strength and awareness.
We brought books, sports and school supplies, but above all: time, attention, and faith in their potential. Young people who dream of their own business, their own education, a new life—these young people deserve opportunities, not dismissal.

👊🏿Two filled and meaningful days full of exp 👊🏿Two filled and meaningful days full of experiences and stories👏🏿
Last Monday and Tuesday, I traveled across the country with two young credible experience colleagues to share the power of storytelling and of sharing experiences. On Monday, we drove from Amsterdam to the east of the country in the sultry heat. On the way, we had an interesting conversation about the influence of religion and faith on one’s actions during and after detention. We didn’t agree on everything, but we did agree that it’s good to have something to draw strength and inspiration from.
Upon arrival at the location, we were welcomed by the school principal, someone who has been working for over 30 years in closed institutions to ensure an open and safe working environment for young people, coaches, and artists alike. I showed some personal stories in video, and one of the young people shared about his own experience in that same institution and what he found challenging at the time. We discussed the value of sharing stories and how to express them artistically to initiate a process of processing past Experiences and healing from it. We concluded by expressing our desire to explore this further at a later date after the summer.
Today was the last day before my vacation begins, and for the third year in a row, I had the opportunity to speak to a group of students from a university in Long Beach, California, at the invitation of Professor Jan Haldipur. In this presentation, I shared how I combine experience and art to build lasting connections with the young people I coach toward an independent life. We discussed the differences between the American and Dutch legal systems, and how quickly you get a life sentence in the US and how many chances you have in the Netherlands before receiving such a sentence.
The students wondered if there was a safety net for people incarcerated with mental health issues, and I shared that spiritual care plays a valuable role in offering reflection and a listening ear. After the lecture, I helped my intern prepare for his first workshops. After a six-month coaching program and a six-month internship, he’ll be giving his first rap workshops this summer.

✨ 📣Stories that deserve to be heard ✨ Yest ✨ 📣Stories that deserve to be heard ✨
Yesterday, at the invitation of my good friend Toon Walravens, I had a wonderful afternoon at the KL-IK youth center. Together with a group of young people with a special background, we talked, shared stories, made music, broke bread 🍞 and, above all, listened attentively to each other.
I shared my own journey—how I once got stuck and how music and my relationship with God helped me find freedom again, in my head and heart. But what these young people shared… amazing! So much talent, courage, fat beats, virtuoso guitars, and beautiful voices. Their stories deserve to be shared further—artistic, musical, vulnerable, and real.
There are wonderful plans to make this possible together. Because what you experience can break you, but it can also make you. And that’s precisely what I want to continue building with these amazing people. I’m already looking forward to it!
Thanks to KL-IK, Bert Dahmen, Jos Netto, Toon Walravens, and of course all the young people who opened up. On to the next step! 🙌🏿💚
💡 Do you have ideas, connections, or inspiration in Limburg that can help these young people make their stories even bigger? Let me know — I’d love to hear your tips or ideas.

A Keti Koti, the chains are broken… 🙌🏿⛓️‍💥
On this warm and beautiful summer day on July 1st, I teach my youngest son about our history, about our ancestors who were warriors, kings and queens amidst the horrors and injustice that were done to them.
Warriors because despite their powerlessness, they never lost their strength and dignity but always held on to the hope of redemption. A number of ancestors had already fought their way free by moving inland and building a life together with native brothers. Other brothers and sisters used their position to hijack ships and sail to a safe country, like my ancestors on Burnside plantation, in Coronie.
Often several of our ancestors tried to free family members from the plantations, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Whatever the outcome, their spirit was never broken. Not during the transatlantic crossing, not during the torture on the plantations and not after independence.
Their DNA is in my blood, fighters who do not give up. That spirit is still present today and by hanging this flag together I hope to convey to him that he is descended from people who fought for dignity and respect.
Just as many people worldwide are currently fighting for their lives. I pray and hope that we as humanity will continue to work to ensure that everyone can live a dignified life; whether it is in Congo, South Sudan, Haiti, Gaza, Jerusalem. Every person has the right to love and protection. Whatever your status, origin or orientation. God loves all of Creation….
Let love Rule ✊🏿🤎🔥
